A-maizing Grace Maize/corn originated in the Americas and through the ages was, and still is, a cultural and nutritional mainstay of many Native American societies. It is depicted in all its stages: from flowering tassle to the shelled cob. Hidden amongst its leaves are a stone "metate" used by indians to grind the corn, and a turkey feather. Turkeys like to eat the remaining kernels after the harvest and are themselves a part of native diet and folklore and of course a central feature of our Thanksgiving tradition. |
