Bearberry-Kinnikinnick Arctostaphylos uva-ursi Ranging from Labrador to California, "Kinnikinnik" is a low-spreading evergreen perennial. The red berries ripening in fall are relished by bears, and Indians dried the leaves for smoking. Teas and washes made from its leaves are used to treat disorders of the intestinal tract and have anti-microbial, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties. Due to its high tannin content this plant is not to be used by children or pregnant women as it may cause nausea and vomiting. |
